HVW’s Newest Wine Fall 2015!

HVW is very excited to announce that we will soon be releasing our newest wine, Pioneer Pumpkin!  As with our Baystate Blueberry launch, the Pioneer Pumpkin will be available at the winery to start and then we will  begin selling it to our retail partners throughout the state in 2016.  This semi-dry white wine blend is made with pumpkin, white wine and Autumn spices.  It’s slightly sweet, full-bodied taste profile makes it perfect to pair with chicken, pork, and turkey.  It is also excellent on its own as a sipping wine or to be enjoyed with your favorite Fall dessert such as pumpkin pie or bread pudding.  To celebrate the release of this wine, we will be having a Pioneer Pumpkin Release Party on Saturday, November 21st at the winery.  The party will feature live music, complementary cheese and crackers, and of course our newest wine, Pioneer Pumpkin, available to sample or to purchase by the glass or bottle!  More details regarding the release party will be available on our Face Book page in the upcoming days.

Hardwick Vineyard & Winery Launches the

“Likes for Life” Program and Contest!

Our “Face Book Friendzy” contest was so well received that we have decided to launch another contest!  This time we are making it even bigger and better than ever!  We are pleased to inform you that beginning this month, we launched our “Likes for Life” Face Book Contest.  While one of our goals here is to increase the number of friends we have “liking” our page, we also decided that we wanted to give something back to various charities including the Pan MA Challenge, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Fisher House Boston, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Greater Boston Food Bank, and Jo’s Jackets.  Beginning in July, we will donate $1.00 for every new like receive each month.*  Our goal is to donate $100.00 per month to one of the charities listed above with your help now through the end of 2015.

Also each month we will hold a drawing where 1 lucky winner will receive a Gift Certificate for a complementary wine tasting at HVW  for up to 10 people!  This tasting includes sampling our local wines, complimentary logo’d HVW glasses, and a wine and cheese platter.  In order to qualify, you simply need to like our new Face Book page here .  You can also access it from our website directly to ensure that you have the RIGHT page.  Additionally we would also recommend that you “Unlike” the old page so that you don’t receive wrong or misleading information about the winery as that page is no longer in our control.

A maximum of $100.00 will be donated to 1 of the above charities each month with a total of $600.00 being donated by HVW during the first 6 months of our “Likes for Life” campaign.

Wishing you a Wine-derful New Year

With the New Year right around the corner we wanted to take a moment to reflect on all the exciting things that have happened this year at Hardwick Vineyard & Winery and share some of our favorites with you.

BONE2014LogoWebThe year started off on a high note with our Massetts Cranberry selected as the 2014 “Editors Choice” winner for Best Cranberry Wine by Yankee Magazine. 2014 was also a year full of fantastic events including our annual Maple Breakfast, the Mountain Moonshine Mystery Dinner, the annual Father’s Day Tractor Show, The Big E and so many more fun events! We tapped into our creative side with Paint Nite Worcester, glass-painting workshops and even hosted local artists to perform live music and display their work in our Celebrate A.R.T series. We loved being involved with the local community and seeing everyone having fun as they created handmade masterpieces and spent quality time with family and friends.

HardwickBlueberryTallThis year will always stand out in our minds as the year of blueberries. After much preparation and anticipation we were able to release our newest wine, Baystate Blueberry. Our Blueberry Bash release party was a huge success and everyone seems to love the blueberry red wine almost as much as us! Although the wine is not yet for sale at our retail partner’s—it is in the works and we will be sure to let you know when it happens!

Just a reminder, the winery is now OPEN YEAR ROUND!  We would like to wish you a happy New Year and thank you for helping make our 2014 such a success!

We look forward to seeing you next season—we know it will be a great one!

The Holidays are Here at Hardwick Vineyard & Winery

The stockings are all hung, the halls are all decked and we are ready to celebrate the holidays here at the Hardwick Vineyard & Winery. As we wrap up our 2014 season, we have filled our calendar with a number holiday themed workshops and classes with partners Bemis Farms Nursery, Paint Nite Worcester and Heartfelt Fine Gifts. Check out the full event descriptions on our event calendar here.
Our annual Holiday Open House was on Sunday, December 7th, and as always, it was a great way to get in the holiday spirit! Attendees enjoyed guided tours of the Giles E. Warner mansion, hot mulled wine and live music by our beautiful 9 ft. blueberry wine-themed tree. They were able to relax by our fireplace and wrap up holiday shopping with bottles of our new Baystate Blueberry wine or a HVW gift basket.

This year we are also proud to be partnering with local organizations Jo’s Jackets and Hardwick’s Christmas for Kids to help children in need this holiday season. Bring a donation of new children’s winter clothing items (hat, gloves, mittens, jackets etc.) or a new unwrapped gift at the Winery and receive a FREE tasting.
Our holiday decorations are still out and we have delicious mulled wine to sip by our tree, so be sure to stop by and enjoy the holidays at the Winery.  We look forward to celebrating the season with you!

Hardwick Vineyard & Winery Releasing Baystate Blueberry Red Wine

HardwickBlueberryTallHardwick, MA—October 24, 2014—Hardwick Vineyard & Winery is announcing the release of their newest wine, Baystate Blueberry, a blend of Marechal Foch grapes and locally grown blueberries. The new wine will be available for purchase at the Winery starting Friday, October 24, 2014.

To celebrate the release of this wine, Hardwick Vineyard & Winery will be hosting a Blueberry Bash party on Saturday, November 8, 2014 from 12:00 pm-3:00pm. The event will include live music from band Nashville Blues, BBQ and blueberry inspired beverages including beer, soda and the newly released Baystate Blueberry wine.

“We’re so excited and proud to be releasing this new wine.” says Jennifer Samek-Lutkus, Owner of Hardwick Vineyard & Winery. “With a rich taste and locally grown ingredients from right here in Massachusetts, this Baystate Blueberry wine truly represents the spirit of this winery.”

A semi-dry red wine, the Baystate Blueberry is a blend of Marechal Foch, a hybrid French red wine grape, and Massachusetts blueberries. With aromas of fresh berries and plum, it is perfectly balanced and features a medium bodied profile, soft tannins and vibrant fruit. Slightly sweet on the palate initially, it dries out nicely on the finish and will pair nicely with red meats, strong cheeses, wild game, as well as turkey and pork tenderloin.

As a family owned and operated winery, the Hardwick Vineyard and Winery has continually combined the local history and traditional New England flavors with their delicious wines. Built at the historical Giles E. Warner mansion in the beautiful country setting of Hardwick, the winery provides patrons with a piece of history with every tasting experience.

The Winery is open Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays & Holiday Mondays from 11:00am-6:00pm and offers tastings of 6 wines accompanied by a souvenir logo glass for $6.00. The newly released Baystate Blueberry wine will be available for tastings and to purchase for by the bottle for $17.00.

Wine Tasting 101 with a Local Twist (Part II)

What to Expect From a Hardwick Wine

As the days begin to shorten and the nights become a little cooler, we try to fit in as many last minute summer activities as the calendar allows. Our thoughts begin to shift to the changing of the seasons and the many things to look forward to in the autumn including; the brightly colored fall foliage, apple picking, attending local agricultural fairs, and children returning to school after a long summer vacation.

Pouring WineThis is also the time of year when Hardwick Vineyard & Winery is gearing up for what is usually our busiest and most exciting season! With over 100 wine tastings already under our belt for 2014, the fall season is the perfect opportunity to taste our local wines. You can visit our winery on the weekend and enjoy a picturesque drive along country roads while leaf peeping, picnic lunches, and of course, delicious wine. Another great option is to spend a fall afternoon sampling wines from all over the world as well as local wines made right here in Massachusetts at one of over 180 retail partners’ Fall Grand Tastings.

If you haven’t had an opportunity to try our wines yet, we think you will be pleasantly surprised and would love to give you a sneak peek at what you can expect.

The first wine that you will taste is our Giles E. Warner dry white wine, which is named after the 1795 Federal style mansion located on our property. This wine is a blend of Cayuga White with a touch of Seyval Blanc and it is a truly elegant white wine with delicate hints of citrus and orange peel. More often than not, our customers say, “it reminds me of the grapes I’d find in my backyard growing up as a child.” This wine is a very dry, clean, clear, and crisp white wine.

Our next wine is a personal favorite, called Yankee Boy White; it is a blend of Cayuga White, Seyval Blanc, and Vidal Blanc. This wine is perfectly balanced with just the right amount of sweetness and some nice acidity accompanied by an explosion of apple and pear flavors. It can be compared to an off-dry Riesling, or even a semi-dry Chenin Blanc in terms of its style. I first fell in love with this wine at my wedding reception at the winery back in 2009 and still enjoy sipping it on my patio almost 5 years later!

Our Yankee Girl Blush is our fruitiest as well as our sweetest wine that we produce and we have deemed this wine “summer in a bottle”. If you are not yet ready to say goodbye to the beautiful summer that we are having, pick up a bottle of this unique blush wine and you will be pleasantly surprised at its complexity. This wine exhibits nice floral and fruit notes with aromas of peach, apricot, melon, passion fruit and strawberry. We use the Yankee Girl Blush in our famous peach sangria that we serve at the winery on Sangria Sundays. We encourage you to try the recipe at home as a refreshing summer cocktail.

BONE2014LogoWebOur fourth wine is what has become our flagship wine, the award winning Massetts Cranberry. This wine has been our best-selling wine for the past 13 years. With a quintessential New England taste, we are proud that it was just recently awarded the editor’s choice award from Yankee Magazine as “the best cranberry wine in New England”. To get the fresh cranberry taste, we blend 10% fresh local cranberries from Clover Hill Farm right here in Hardwick along with 90% Cayuga White. The cranberries are added post-fermentation which gives the wine just the right amount of tartness, acidity and just a touch of sweetness. This wine is similar in style to an off-dry
rose and would go great with freshly picked apples, or even a homemade apple pie for dessert!

Our dry red wine aptly named, Hardwick Red, is a beautiful wine that is made with 100% Marechal Foch. If I had to compare this wine to something that you may be more familiar with, I would have to say that it is similar in style to a Beaujolais or a lighter style Pinot Noir. With a full bodied flavor, the Hardwick Red displays a rich bouquet of berry, plum and a unique spicy quality that pairs well with red meats, wild game, and rich sauces.

The last wine that we produce is our Quabbin Native. This wine is technically our dessert wine however it is not cloyingly sweet and actually dries out nicely on the finish. Made with 100% Catawba grapes, this wine exhibits aromas of wild grapes and fresh raspberries and is comparable in style to a bright, fresh, and fruity semi-sweet rose. The most common reaction I get from people tasting this wine is that “that is unlike any wine that I have ever tasted!”

So whether you are trying to get in some last minute summer activities or looking ahead to planning your autumn day trips, make sure to incorporate a visit to our winery where you will be able to enjoy a taste of New England incorporating Yankee ingenuity with our traditional winemaking! If you can’t make it to the winery, don’t forget to stop by to see us at the many local fairs and festivals this fall including the Big E in West Springfield as well as Red Apple Farm in Phillipston. Lastly, you can always stop by to see David, Mary Beth, Amy, Missa or myself at one of our many retail partner locations throughout MA. Just follow us on Facebook for updates on where our next tasting will be. Until next time, I hope you enjoy many new and exciting wines and thanks for supporting local!

A Weekend in Hardwick – Les Campbell and a Fair

Hardwick Community FairThe third weekend in August is always an exciting few days here in Hardwick as the town hosts the annual Hardwick Community Fair. Held on the Hardwick town common, the fair is recognized as the oldest fair in the United States with this year marking it’s 252nd
anniversary. It is always packed with family friendly activities that everyone will enjoy, and embraces the local agriculture community with exhibits, booths and more.

Only a quick 10 minute drive from the town common, Hardwick Vineyard and Winery always looks forward to hosting fair attendees.  We are excited to be adding to the area’s weekend festivities with some great events right here at the Winery:

  • This Friday, August 15th our weekend kicks of with an Artist Reception to celebrate the 89th birthday of acclaimed photographer Les Campbell as part of our Celebrate A.R.T. series. The event is open to the public and will showcase his work from “The Early Years”, including black & white portraits and nature photography.
  • Saturday, August 16th the Winery will be open for tastings 11am – 6pm so stop by before or after you visit the Fair to view exhibits, enjoy the Chicken BBQ and take part in a true New England tradition.
  • To wrap the weekend up, join us for our weekly Sangria Sunday (11 a.m.-6p.m.) with live music starting at 2:30. We recommend grabbing a delicious breakfast from Rose 32 and taking a scenic drive to check the Ware–Hardwick Covered Bridge or the Quabbin Reservoir on the way.

Whether you’re looking for the perfect summer day trip or a weekend away (check out our list of additional attractions and great B&B’s here), the beautiful countryside and local attractions of Hardwick are always a good bet, but a trip during the 3rd weekend in August will be something you’ll never forget.

The Perfect Recipe for a Great Girls Night Out

Here at Hardwick Vineyard and Winery we are lucky to have great customers of all types.  Our tasting room and deck are often filled with groups of friends, families and even coworkers. One of the most common, and one of our favorite groups to entertain are groups of girls out for a night of fun.  Having seen so many groups like this and hosted a few “Girls Night Out” events we’ve learned a few things that seem to add up to one fantastic girls night out.

  1. Good Friends – This may sound obvious, but 1956798_632499113498166_5949659823878303864_owhen planning a girls night out it’s important to remember that the best girls night’s happen when you’re with the best of friends.  Whether it’s a few best friends or a group of close friends, be sure to include girls that are close enough to be comfortable with one-another and enjoy each other’s company.  A good girl’s night embraces fun but avoids drama—inviting the right group of friends can help make this happen.
  2. A Theme – Choosing a theme can help set the stage for the entire night.   A theme could be as simple as saying that the evening will be a “relaxing girls night” or a “night out on the town”.  Immediately this information provides a framework for expectations and insight regarding what the evening will include.  By taking the theme one step further to become a genre theme like “80’s”, “country”, or even “a fiesta”,  the event will practically plan itself.  This will help dictate not just the tone of the evening but also outfits, activities, food and drinks!
  3. Memorable Location – The best girls nights will result in memories that last a lifetime.  To help these memories take hold be sure to choose a location that set’s your night apart from the norm. Here at Hardwick Vineyard and Winey, our outdoor deck has proven to be the perfect location for gatherings.  Our historic mansion in its beautiful rural setting provides visitors with a view they can’t help but remember.
  4. Fun Activities – Including a planned activity or two can help encourage interaction, keep your mind sharp, and make time fly.  Whether it’s attending a paint nite, participating in a wine tasting or playing some fun games—including an activity that encourages fun times and laughter is a must at any great girls night.
  5. 1956798_632499113498166_5949659823878303864_oGreat Food – To be sure the girls stay happy and the mood stays upbeat having delicious snacks or food is key.  A girl’s night that begins before mealtime should include meal options—something to consider when choosing a location.  If you’re location doesn’t offer meals you can always plan to bring a picnic (we always recommend picking sandwiches up from Clover Hill or Rose 32 if you’re headed to HVW), or munch on snacks like cheese and crackers or veggies an hummus. If the night has a theme you can even choose a location and a cuisine to match that theme!  For example, having a “country” themed night out?  Kick you’re night off at a BBQ joint!
  6. Top Notch Drinks – The perfect drink can be an instant que to relax and have some fun.  We’ve found that often guests at our Sangria Sundays smile a bit wider after just the first sip of our delicious Peach Sangria.  Sangria is always a great option for themed fiesta and a favorite wine is always an option but we know that a drink menu with variety for all taste buds is always a win.  Remember that not all girl’s nights include alcohol…but they all include delicious drinks and a lot of girl talk!
